NTN’s Green Line Bearing Units Provide Significant Increase to Life of Floor Auger

A leading producer of insulation, roofing, fiberglass composites and other related materials was experiencing regular production-halting bearing failures on the floor auger used to move shingle granules throughout its manufacturing facility. The frequent failures resulted in over $32,000 of annual expenses to keep the machine running efficiently. 

NTN’s engineering and sales support team performed a thorough evaluation of the auger and determined the competitor’s bearings were failing every two weeks due to failing seals caused by abrasion from shingle granules piling up on the bearings. 

The NTN Solution

NTN’s team recommended that the competitor’s bearings be replaced with our Green Line pillow blocks. Green Line, NTN’s tried-and-true line of mounted bearing units, incorporates a unique seal and flinger design in the bearing insert to protect against contamination. Furthermore, Green Line units are cap capable, allowing for the installation of external covers on the bearing housing in this application. These robust covers protect the bearing from both large and small contaminants with optional cast iron construction and the inclusion of a double-lip seal designed to accept shaft misalignment. The result is additional protection in highly contaminated environments such as this one. 

The Result

The NTN solution lasted 16 times longer! NTN’s Green Line bearing units successfully ran for eight months compared to the competitor’s bearing that was failing twice a month. The increased uptime, decrease in annual maintenance, and the reduced acquisition cost resulted in $31,404 in annual cost savings for the customer.
